Poshmark is an online marketplace for fashion, accessories, new personal care products and select home goods.
How To Make Money on Poshmark?
You can sell new and used items on the poshmark app, but in this article I’m going to share with you tips to make money on the app selling preowned items based on my personal experience, because it’s the easiest way to start for free or with only few hundred dollars.
1- Sourcing:
Sourcing is very important to make money on Poshmark. You can start for free by cleaning out your closet to get rid of clothes you don’t wear anymore, but that will only give you enough time to learn how to list, ship to buyers, and how the Poshmark app works.
To sell on a regular basis you need to find a good source of merchandise for your Poshmark closet. A good source of merchandise is a place where you can find high quality items for cheap, so take your time to find a good sourcing place to avoid having a closet full of low quality items that don’t sell or items that sell but don’t make you any profit.
It took me a few years to finally find a goodwill outlet that only a few resellers visit because the ones I used to go to were well known to the resellers in my area.
Examples of sourcing places you can check in your area before you start: Goodwill stores, Goodwill outlets, Flee Markets, Salvation Army Stores, Garage Sales…You can also purchase your merchandise online from places like Bulq, Liquidation, Direct Liquidation…
Tip: I purchased my merchandise from all these sources over the years, but since I found a goodwill outlet with less competition, my business got better, especially that the Goodwill Outlets stores charge a flat fee based on the weight of your purchases. Most items will cost you less than a dollar.
2- Listing:
Save your time and don’t overthink listing. It is very simple: add a title, photos, description…Many articles make it seem so hard to list especially for beginners who don’t even understand what a keyword means, just make sure you tell potential customers everything they need to know about the item. Lets say you have a small J.Crew black shirt that you are selling, your title should include the brand, the type of item, the color and the size, in this example it should be J.Crew women’s Shirt Black Size S.
Tip: Consistency, Consistency, Consistency
When you think about listing, think about consistency. It is by far the most important way to make more sales not only on Poshmark, but also on eBay, Mercari, Etsy…
Don’t waste your time and focus on consistency, if you have 9 items in your inventory, don’t list them all in one day, instead list 3 each day.
3- Photos:
I use a white background on my photos but I don’t believe that it matters so much. As long as the potential customers can see the item clearly, the tags, the color, the size, and any features of the item, then your photos should be good enough to make a sale.
Tip: Make sure you add as many photos as you can, show the item, its measurement and features clearly, and avoid adding other items or decors in your photos to don’t distract the potential buyer’s attention from the item that you are selling.
4- Social Aspect of Poshmark:
Poshmark is unique because it’s a social platform. To make money you should be consistent with elements related to its social aspect. If you are looking for a list it and forget it type of app, Poshmark is not for you.
4.1- Following Other Poshers:
It’s important to follow other poshers who most of the time will follow you back. Having a lot of followers gives more exposure to your closet.
4.2- Sharing Your Closet:
Sharing your listings with your followers increases your chances to make sales. It’s not clear how often poshers should share their closets to make more sales, but it’s proven that the more you share your listings, the more chances you have to make sales.
4.3- Share Other Poshers Listings:
When you share other poshers listings, most of the time they do the same and share your listings with their followers. This gives your items more exposure.
4.4- Share To Parties:
Poshmark parties are real-time virtual shopping events where poshers meet to look for a #PoshFind.
It’s important to share your listings to parties because the audience is usually potential buyers looking for the specific brand or the type of item that you are sharing.
5- Offers:
I accept any reasonable offer to keep my closet active, get more 5 star ratings, positive feedbacks, and create a long term relationship with my customers who can buy from me again.
When poshers like my items but don’t buy, I try to offer them discounts in price and even shipping.
6- Customer Service:
It’s important to provide good customer service on Poshmark. Happy customers give you 5 star ratings and good feedback which encourages other poshers to buy from you. In addition to that satisfied buyers will come back and buy from you over and over again.
To provide good customer service, make sure that your item descriptions and photos include all the information buyers should know including defects, respond to other poshers requests and questions as soon as you can, and show appreciation to your customers in order to create a long term relationship by adding a thank you card when you ship your items, for example.
