Before I provide you with my tips on how to increase sales on Mercari, I would like to answer some Mercari seller community questions.

1- What is Mercari?

Mercari is an online marketplace where buyers and sellers can buy and sell almost anything.

If you have stuff around your house that you don’t use, Mercari is the place to sell it. You should also try it if you are an established seller in other online platforms such as Ebay, Poshmark, Etsy…to reach more customers.

2- Is Mercari Legit?

Yes. Mercari is a legit ecommerce platform where people can easily and securely buy and sell goods.

2.2- Tips:

As a customer and seller on Mercari, I can say with confidence that the company is legitimate. But keep in mind that sellers on Mercari aren’t employees, they are independent contractors, businesses or individuals using the app to sell their merchandise.

To avoid getting scammmed on Mercari, Ebay, Poshmark…apply the following tips:

  • Never share your login information.
  • Don’t answer any personal questions.
  • Use a strong password.
  • Refuse any requests to deal outside the app.
  • Confirm orders fast ( within 3 days ) in order for you to return fake or damaged items.
  • And be skeptical when a deal is too good to be true.

3- Can I Advertise My Account on Mercari?

No. Mercari doesn’t allow any form of advertising.This is why more new sellers are and will be using the Mercari platform where they have a fair chance to succeed.

Some of the other well known marketplaces allow sellers who have more money to dominate by advertising their accounts and buying their way to the top of the search results, while new sellers struggle and can’t advertise or compete. (Many of them simply quit).

To make selling fair on Mercari, we don’t allow listings that advertise accounts. We don’t allow any form of advertising on Mercari. Listings advertising your personal account or external websites or services isn’t allowed.

To get the best visibility in keyword searches, we suggest writing detailed listing descriptions.

4- Is Mercari 100% Free?

Listing an item is always free on Mercari (0% fee to create a listing). A minimum fee of 10% of the item price is charged to the seller for a completed sale.

The following tips are not guaranteed to increase your sales. You can test them and evaluate their impact on your Mercari store. These tips helped me increase my sales.

5- My Tips to Increase Sales on Mercari

5.1- Buy the right merchandise for the right price:

If you are getting rid of items sitting in your garage, you list them and wait for them to be sold. But if you are buying merchandise to resell on Mercari to make money, it is important to find out what items are in demand in the app.

You can sell almost anything on Mercari, clothes, toys, electronics…Just check the category you prefer and select sold items to find out about the items that sell and are in demand in the app.

Example of brands that can sell fast if the price is right. Some are high end but it’s not uncommon to find them at goodwill outlets.

5.2- Improve the Quality of your Listings:

It is easy to list an item on Mercari, but it’s important to add all the information necessary to describe the item you are selling and to reflect its condition.

Using Mercari will help show your items to potential customers. It’s up to you to convert that potential buyer to a customer who buys your item.

That can be done with a good listing that convinces the customer to buy from you.

5.2.1- Photos:

Try to upload as many photos as you can to show all the angles of your item and to reflect its real condition. Mercari allows a maximum of 12 photos per listing.

Use a white background when you can to help potential customers focus on the item and take photos that show any damage or flaws in your item to avoid returns and bad feedback.

5.2.2- Title:

Mercari allows the use of a maximum of 40 characters in the title. Make sure your title is keyword focused and includes the search keywords customers will use while searching.

I usually use brand, type of item, and size in my titles.

5.2.3- Description:

Mercari allows a maximum of 1000 characters in the description. Provide a detailed description of your item while focusing on the keywords that best describes your item, and gives all the information that the potential customer will need to make a purchase.

Don’t forget to describe any damage in your item to avoid returns and bad feedback.

I always add brand, item type, category, condition, size, color, material, country of origin (Where the item was made), measurements, and any specific characteristic that the item has. Then I describe any flaws.

(You may need to add more to your description if you are selling in a category other than clothing, by describing the functionality of the item).

Detailed descriptions will help your items show up in Mercari search results, which will translate to an increase in sales.

5.2.4- Price:

Deciding your item’s price can be complicated. It’s not just a number that you select, but a formula that includes your item’s cost (The price you paid for the item), your selling fees (Including Mercari 10% fee), and the profit you are willing to accept.

Check your competition to don’t price your item too high, and keep in mind that you will need to lower your price to accept offers from customers, and to offer discounts to likers (Members who like your item) if the item doesn’t sell fast enough.

5.3- Customer Service:

Providing good customer service will help you get more positive feedback and 5 star ratings, which will encourage more potential customers to trust you and buy your merchandise.

To provide good customer service, answer customers questions and respond to their requests quickly, accept offers when they are reasonable, offer discounts, ship your items quickly, and add a personal touch by sending a Thank You card in your packages.

To increase sales on Mercari, improve the quality of your listings (by improving photo quality, adding a keyword focused title and a detailed description), offer competitive prices, and provide a better customer service.
