Is Mercari Better than Poshmark?
Mercari and Poshmark are competing online selling platforms. Poshmark has been around longer than Mercari, but Mercari is growing in demand. Poshmark caters to higher end fashion where as Mercari is all about the ease of selling and making it super simple. Both Mercari and Poshmark have their pros and cons. However in my personal opinion, if I had to choose one over the other I would choose Mercari.
Mercari allows you to list almost anything with the exception of things you don’t own, illegal things like drugs, weapons and counterfeit items and items that are not safe to ship. Whereas Poshmark only allows fashion, accessories, new personal care products, and select home goods.
Although its free to list on both Mercari and Poshmark, Mercari only charges a 10% fee when an item sells (beginning October 1, 2020, all new listings on Mercari will include a 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing fee when the item sells). Poshmark’s commission is 20% for all sales $15 or more. For all sales under $15 Poshmark takes a flat fee of $2.95.
Mercari offers several different options for shipping for both the buyer and the seller. They offer low fixed rates with USPS and Fedex. Rates are based on the weight of package. As a seller you can have the buyer pay for shipping or offer free shipping. Poshmark provides a flat rate shipping fee of $7.11 for all packages up to 5lbs. with additional shipping fees for over 5lbs. As a seller you can offer buyers shipping discounts or free shipping which comes out of your commission.
Both Mercari and Poshmark offer promotional tools to sellers to entice buyers to purchase. Mercari offers smart pricing which allows you to set your starting price and floor price and Mercari will adjust the price based upon demand until it reaches the floor price. Mercari will notify buyers who like your listing anytime the price is adjusted. Mercari also allows you to promote your listings to likers or to the public. When you promote to people who like your listing, you can send an offer only to those buyers as long as its at least 5% below the listing price. Or you can promote to the public which will automatically lower the price by 5%. Poshmark also offers promotional tools, however when sending offers to likers it has to be at least 10% below the listing price and you have to offer a shipping discount as well.
Poshmark does offer additional seller tools like stats and reports which helps to keep track of inventory and sales which Mercari doesn’t have. But Mercari is super simple and easy to use. It is also super easy to make sales whereas Poshmark takes a little bit more work. Poshmark is a social app which requires you to share your listings to get the most amount of eyes on your listing as possible to make sales. It takes more effort to make sales.
I use both apps to sell but if I had to choose only one to use I would definitely choose Mercari.
