Is it Rude to Decline an Offer on Mercari?

No, it is not rude to decline an offer on Mercari.

Although most offers I receive are reasonable or fair, there always tends to be a few buyers who will send low ball offers.

These offers don’t take into account the cost of goods or the time and effort it takes to list an item. In these cases it is best to just decline the offer.

In most cases these buyers won’t consider a counter offer because they are not willing to pay more for the item, that’s why they low-balled you in the first place. In the unusual circumstance that they do accept a counter offer, you are risking the chance that the customer is unhappy with the item, tries to scam you in some way or gives you a bad feedback just out of spite. Therefore declining these types of offers is usually the best way to go.

However, even if a buyer thinks their offer is fair, a seller needs to take into account the cost of goods and any other expense that goes into listing an item (ie. payroll, packaging materials, fees) before accepting an offer.

Once you have tabulated these cost from the offer and as long as you are comfortable with your profit margin then you can accept the offer. If you are not satisfied then you can either decline or make a counteroffer.
